6. green Day – Nimrod (1997)

49 mins

Run day – Thursday 1st February, 2024.

This is a backdated post because I started the project in January before I decided to start this blog.

Nimrod is such a loaded album. It’s interesting because I was reading a bit about it before I did my run, and apparently the intention was to ditch the classic 3-chord-thrash-it-out sound that Green Day had become known for, and compile an album with songs that played around with different styles. I feel like it succeeded in that! Hitchin’ A Ride and Good Riddance played EVERYWHERE when I was a kid, I mean, the cultural impact of Good Riddance was just so huge and enduring even if people cringe about it. I used to cringe about it. When I started the album at the beginning of my run, I thought that I would try to run as fast as I could to see if I could make it back home before Good Riddance played! But I realise how silly that is. It’s not my favourite song on the album, but it was the first song I learnt to play and fingerpick on a guitar and I’m sure it was that way for thousands of people. The hardest decision grade 7 and 12 classes in the late 90s/early 2000s had was to choose between using either Good Riddance or Vitamin C’s Graduation (Friends Forever) as their graduation song.

My favourite track is Last Ride In. I love instrumental tracks on albums, especially ones that feel like they have come completely out of left field. Have people slept on this?! This is an underated modern CLASSIC and it took me on a TRIP. It was like I was spiralling through the Charade (1963) opening sequence- STRONG Henry Mancini vibes. Remember when films played credits at the beginning?! Listening to this, I felt like I was James Bond sneaking around beach cabanas. I must honour Last Ride In and write a screenplay for a neo-noir, spy surf thriller so that it can be the main theme.

That’s it! Warning next!
