3. Green dAy – Kerplunk! (1991)

42 mins

Run day – Thursday 18th January, 2024.

This is a backdated post because I started the project in January before I decided to start this blog.

I was really looking forward to re-listening to Kerplunk! because it’s always been one of my favourite Green Day albums but I’ve neglected it over the years by forgetting to listen to it. This is one of the reasons why I chose Green Day as the first artist I would focus on for this project. I stumbled across them in those formative tween years when I was soaking everything up like a sponge, still figuring out what I liked, what I didn’t, who I “was” etc. Dookie or Nimrod would’ve been my gateway because I remember hearing singles from both being played EVERYWHERE. So I borrowed the CDs out from the library and found Kerplunk! too, and they became solid foundations to nurture my lifelong love of pop-punk/alt rock/all of the other genres/whatever else you want to add here. BUT, Green Day ended up on the backburner, not necessarily a conscious decision, but I was just listening to so many other things, I forgot about them for little bit. I was 14 when American Idiot was released and it absolutely dominated the airwaves. After that, I just didn’t listen to them. I thought it would be a good idea to start again now.

Kerplunk! is an absolute banger of an album, and a good portent of things to come in terms of how they would evolve as a band over the next couple of albums. My favourite track is Words I Might Have Ate – it’s fun and jaunty, and I like the harmonies and that little echoey bit after the chorus. Nothing deep, that’s it for me! Also, I really feel the need to give Dominated Love Slave a special mention - BANGER! Good to have Tré Cool on board now! Looking forward to some future tom-tom action.

The 42 mins felt nice and cruisy for a gentle run. I feel like the length of early Green Day albums are perfect for a zero pressure, sweet run.

That’s it! It was fun. Looking forward to Dookie next!
