2. Green day – 39/Smooth (1990)

31 mins

Run day – Tuesday 16th January, 2024

This is a backdated post because I started the project in January before I decided to start this blog.

Because I’m writing this now, that is, not at the time that I did the run, I don’t remember too much about the run itself. This entry (and the following until I catch up to my recent runs) will most likely be more of a commentary about the album and songs. My plan though is to balance this more as I go as my run thoughts will be fresh!

I have a vague recollection of listening to 39/Smooth back in high school but remembered absolutely nothing about it. I was stoked for some bright, plucky punk because you really can’t go wrong with it while you are running (or at anytime actually). I didn’t want a long run so I only listened to the 39/Smooth half of 1039/Smoothed out Slappy Hours (the re-released extended version with all of their early EP stuff). The first track At The Library was my favourite from the very beginning – I feel like there is something special about a band’s first album from this period. And I want to say that Billie Joe was like 18 years old when this was released? The lyrics are punchy and relatable, something I think that he is particularly good at. How good are punk songs that duke it all out in less than 3 mins a piece! Banger song, banger songwriter. I don’t think that Tré Cool was drumming with Green Day yet, so the only thing I missed was the distinct abscence of those driving tom-toms!

Great album for a 30 min run!
